  • Indoor PM2.5 monitor: A local, real-time reading from one sensor in one room of your home, reflecting whatever is happening in that space right now.

Checking the outdoor AQI is still useful even if you have an indoor monitor. On days when the outdoor AQI is high, keeping windows closed can help keep outdoor particles from adding to whatever your indoor sources are already producing.

What a Low-Cost Monitor Does Not Tell You

Most consumer PM2.5 monitors are built to track particles specifically. They are not general air quality labs, and a good reading on the display does not mean every pollutant in the room is under control. Here is what a typical low-cost sensor is not designed to catch:

  • Carbon monoxide, which needs its own dedicated CO detector
  • Radon, which requires a radon-specific test kit or monitor
  • Mold and other biological pollutants, which aren’t measured as a particle count in the same way
  • Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds released by furniture, paints, or pressed wood products
  • What actually caused a spike, since most basic sensors report a particle count without identifying whether it came from cooking, candles, tobacco smoke, or dust

A PM2.5 monitor is one piece of a bigger indoor air picture, not the whole picture.

Particle pollution, indoors or outdoors, tends to affect some people more than others. People with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, older adults, and young children are generally considered more sensitive to particle exposure and may want to respond to elevated indoor readings sooner rather than later.
